Usk Talybont 31 January 2010
On 31st January 11 members of SVCC and Jo, a club associate from
Swansea, travelled on any icy morning to Talybont on Usk for a run
down to the new get out at Gliffaes Hotel.
After spending some time playing on the small chute above Mill Falls, it was time to run the falls
themselves. Water levels were low so all but one of the group chose
to have a go, with the main entertainment being provided by Jeff
who became pinned to a rock two thirds of the way down and had to
run the last third backwards.
Just above Llangynidr bridge, Geoff started the swim
entertainment with an interesting break in from a river left eddy
into a fast moving chute. The entertainment tripled when Gavin and
Mandy came out of their open canoe breaking out into the same
eddy.
Moving on downriver the group came to Spuhlers Folly, a ledge drop of around 3-4
feet. Dave and Will chose to run this river left, with all but the
two portages running down the fast moving and great fun chute far
river right.
Swim count was a tie between Geoff, Gavin, Mandy, Andy and Izzy
at one each, excellent considering the low levels and the number of
exposed rocks.
Congratulations to Izzy for completing her first decent white
water trip, and for staying upright until being within 100m of the
get out; and to Geoff for only swimming once - must be the new
kayak.
Commiserations to Jeff for turning up with a flat battery in his
new waterproof camera, hence the lack of photos, and thanks to
Gavin for proving some snaps at Mill Falls.
Lastly thanks to Dave Thomas for
once again organising such a great trip.
