Walkham 27 February 2011
On a cool, stormy Sunday mornign we all met at Tavistock main
car park with a though of doing the testing Middle Tavy. Water
levels were however too low, so we decided to do the Walkham
instead.
On checking the Middle Walkham at Huckworthy Bridge we decided
this was too low and went down to the put in just off the A386 at
Bedford Bridge which had just about enough water.
This provided another opportunity for Jeff and Dave P to hone
their 4* leadership skills before assessment. With Jeff taking the
lead for the first 2/3 of the Lower Walkham.
Naivigating around a relatively bony river with a couple of tree
portages, we finally got to the Grade 3+ slot rapid.
Most of us decided to run this with various degrees of success,
with Andy recording his first swim for 16 months, and Dave managing
to leave his paddle stuck across the slot.
Further nice grade 3- rapids, although a bit bony, took us
nicely down to the confluence with the Tavy.
Looking at best grade 3 section of the Lower Tavy we all had a
go and ran this successfully, with Dave P exercising his roll for
the second time of the day!
Finally we proceeded on down the Tavy, a beautiful river in its
own right, to the Forestry Commission take out at Denham Wood.
